Southern's television station is proud to play a role in the Missouri Southern State University's increasing International Mission. A strong background of service to the University and the Joplin area community helps form the framework for a transition to the communications needs of tomorrow.
History of Missouri Southern Television
Missouri Southern Television serves the educational needs of Missouri Southern State University and the programming needs of the Joplin community. The system was established in 1984, as a service of the Department of Communication. The station initially operated as a designated cable channel on the Joplin cable television system. Programming included regular coverage of Joplin City Council meetings, and numerous programs presented by students, faculty and staff of the University. In January of 1988, the University began broadcasting television programming on a low-power television station, K57DR-TV. The call letters were changed in 1995 to KGCS-LP, to stand for "Global Communications System" tying into the University's international mission. The combined reach of the cable television penetration and the broadcast signal gives Missouri Southern Television the potential to reach more than 50,000 area television viewers.
