History
The International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors (ISWNE) was founded in 1955 at Southern Illinois University (SIU) by Howard R. Long, then chair of SIU's Department of Journalism at Carbondale, and Houstoun Waring, then editor of the Littleton (Colo.) Independent.

Headquarters
•Missouri Southern State College in Joplin (1999 to present)
•South Dakota State University in Brookings (1992 to 1999)
•Northern Illinois University at DeKalb (1976 to 1992)

Purpose
The ISWNE's purpose is to help those involved in the weekly press to improve standards of editorial writing and news reporting and to encourage strong, independent editorial voices. The society seeks to fulfill its purpose by holding annual conferences, issuing awards, issuing publications, and encouraging international exchanges.

Membership
There are ISWNE members in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan; and there are subscribers to the Grassroots Editor, the society's quarterly journal, in still more countries.
