History
The
International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors (ISWNE) was founded
in 1955 at Southern Illinois University (SIU) by Howard R. Long, then
chair of SIU's Department of Journalism at Carbondale, and Houstoun Waring,
then editor of the Littleton (Colo.) Independent.

Purpose
The
ISWNE's purpose is to help those involved in the weekly press to improve
standards of editorial writing and news reporting and to encourage strong,
independent editorial voices. The society seeks to fulfill its purpose
by holding annual conferences, issuing awards, issuing publications, and
encouraging international exchanges.
Membership
There
are ISWNE members in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom,
Ireland,
Australia, New Zealand, and Japan; and there are
subscribers to the Grassroots Editor, the society's quarterly journal,
in still more countries.
