MEMORANDUM

To:       Fair Directors

From:   Michele Glidden, Director of Science Education Programs

Re:       SSP Middle School Program – suspended in 2009

With much regret, Society for Science & the Public announces that the SSP Middle School Program will be suspended, effective in 2009, because sponsorship to support the expense of the program has not been indentified.

SSP remains committed to continuing efforts to secure a sponsor or sponsors to support a program that serves our middle school science fair participants, and, if successful, will reactivate the SSP Middle School Program in the future.

We are extremely proud of the ten years of the program and the accomplishments of over 75,000 middle school science fair participants.  A total of 3,900 semifinalists and 390 finalists were honored over the course of the DYSC, the DCYSC and the SSP Middle School Program from 1999-2008. We have delighted in seeing alumni of this program participate in our high school programs, the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair and the Intel Science Talent Search, and in hearing of their achievements in so many other arenas.

Society for Science & the Public and Intel have recently celebrated the extension and expansion of its partnership in support of our high school programs, and we look forward to seeing many of you through your participation in the Intel ISEF and the Intel STS.  We have every confidence that in less challenging economic times, we will secure sponsorship to reestablish a quality program that celebrates and encourages the critically important middle school student.

Thanks to each of you for the support you have provided to this program and to SSP, and best wishes for your continued success in science education.
