ALLEN H. MERRIAM Dr. Allen H. Merriam is Professor of Speech Communication at Missouri Southern State College where he has taught since 1982. A native of New Jersey, he has a B.A. in English from Drew University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Speech Communication from Ohio University. From 1965 to 1967 he served as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Kabul, Afghanistan where he taught English at Habibia High School and did public relations work at Radio Afghanistan. He later interned in international broadcasting at the Voice of America in Washington, D.C. He has traveled in 30 countries. Dr. Merriam has taught at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, the University of Virginia, and Trenton State College. In 1980 he participated in a Fulbright Study Tour of India and spoke at the International Association of Historians of Asia conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia that same year. He is the author of GANDHI vs. JINNAH: The Debate over the Partition of India (1980) as well as 25 articles or book chapters on intercultural communication and rhetorical studies.
