Hispanic journalist Patricia Duarte spoke on "Latinas and Leadership" at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9 in Webster Auditorium. Her speech was sponsored by the Institute of International Studies in conjunction with the Latin America Semester at Missouri Southern State College. Ms. Duarte has proven to be a dynamic force, impacting the worlds of both print and broadcast media. She is editor in chief of Lamaze Parents Magazine in Spanish, a parenting publication for Hispanic mothers that circulates 500,000 copies in the United States. As an editor, she has long endeavored to assist other Hispanics facing the special circumstances and difficulties of surviving in a new land, spearheading projects designed to enhance the lives of these many individuals. She broke new ground when she, as founding editor in chief, helped launch Essence Communications popular Latina Magazine, a unique bilingual publication that targets young Hispanic women living in the United States. She also founded Whittle Communications award-winning La Familia de Hoy, a service magazine for newly arrived Latino families. Ms. Duarte has been a spokesperson for La Familia de Hoy on Univision, and a feature reporter on Telemundo. She is presently a guest editorialist for the British Broadcasting Corporations radio service. Ms. Duarte also has the distinction of appearing on the pages of "Whos Who Among Hispanic Americans in the United States." Currently, she presides over Duarte & Associates, an agency specializing in Hispanic media projects. She lives in Manhattan with her son, Alfredo. |
