- To prepare for academic work at Missouri Southern through a solid English
language preparation program.
- To support language learners throughout their time at MSSU with additional
language support courses beyond the IEP.
- To provide English language instruction for second language learners
for business or personal purposes.
- To serve the International Mission of
Missouri Southern by increasing the impact of international students
on campus and in the Joplin community.
- To provide English language instruction through native speakers of
American English, speakers of World Englishes and others who are themselves
second language learners of English.
- To provide many opportunities for learning and using English, including:
- classroom instruction
- conversation partnerships
- on campus language activity groups (reading
clubs, speaker bureaus, etc.)
- off-campus language intensive activities
- participation in community groups that provide
cultural experience
- on campus housing with native speakers of English
- To help new residents to the Joplin area whose primary language is
not English learn the language skills necessary for their needs.

Having international students on campus is not part of
the international mission recognized and funded by the State of Missouri.
Increasing the number of international students does not necessarily
lead to a greater awareness of the world. But MSSU strives to incorporate
our international student body into the university mission by making
them a part of the campus and Joplin community. We do this through placement
of international students with host families, in local service clubs
and organizations, and leadership activities on campus.
If you come to Missouri Southern, prepare for
opportunities to offer your experiences, language, understanding and
culture to those around you. It is your gift to the people of Missouri!
We value what you have to offer us, and we thank you for that gift.
