The University of Kansas
Short Term Institutes Abroad
2003 Fall Institute
The International Festival of
New Latin American Film, La Habana, Cuba
Attend six class meetings at the University of Missouri - Kansas City
during the Fall 2003 semester, spend six days in La Habana, Cuba in December'03,
and receive a total of four credit hours.
Program Description
Cuba is a land of incredible beauty with a fascinating culture and a
colorful history. An island nation of approximately 11 million inhabitants,
Cuba is one of the most historically and politically rich islands of
the Caribbean, although it is one of the least commercialized due to
its relative political isolation. Cuba, while often studied, remains
a mystery to most Americans.
This program consists of three weekend seminar meetings held at the
University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) during the month of November
2003 in which various aspects of Cuban history, culture, and film are
introduced. Through readings, lectures, discussion, and the viewing of
Cuban films, the class will examine a variety of topics related to Cuban
cinema, history, and modem-day reality. Topics will include: the Cuban
Revolution, the role of women in Cuban history, ethnic minorities, Cuban
video movements, voices of the youth, and postmodern views of Cuba.
This course culminates in a six-day study trip to La Habana, Cuba to
participate in the 25th Annual International Festival of Latin American
Film, held December 2-12, 2003. Check out the following website to see
the schedule of events from the 2002 festival: http://
www.habanafihnfestival.com/.
Students participating in the six-day study trip will be required to
take part in an orientation session held on Tuesday, December 2, 2003
in which they will learn basic "survival" Spanish skills, become
familiar with the geography and important sites of La Habana, and be
introduced to the customs and cultural traits of Cubans.
Program Director
Professor Tamara Falicov, Theatre and Film, will lead both the lectures
during the fall semester and the travel onion of the program. See contact
information below.
