COMPREHENSIVE DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM
SAFETY AND TRAINING
All commercial drivers for the University, (including faculty and student employee drivers) must participate in the safety-training program.
The training process is divided into three sections: General Orientation, Road Test, and Driver Safety Training.
1. General Orientation: New drivers receive a personal copy of the Comprehensive Driver Safety Program. Both driver and supervisor review the policies and sign a declarative statement referencing the date the information was received and reviewed. (Appendix item F)
2. Road Test: New drivers must be able to demonstrate their ability to drive a commercial vehicle during the Road Test. The purpose is to allow the driver to become familiar with the vehicle they will be driving and for the supervisor to judge the driver s ability to operate the vehicle and evaluate their sensitivity to safety. (Appendix item G)
3. Driver Safety Training: A trained supervisor should instruct new drivers how to perform the Pre-Trip and Post-Trip inspections required by DOT regulations. (Appendix item H, and Appendix item I) Other topics of hazard recognition and awareness should also be addressed. (i.e. equipment safety, defensive driving techniques, safe parking, backing procedures, use of fire extinguishers, etc.)
Vehicle Maintenance
Drivers should utilize the Pre and Post-Trip Inspections to report to the Physical Plant regarding any problems or discrepancies with their vehicle.
The Physical Plant, fleet maintenance, is responsible for the performance of regular preventative maintenance on all campus vehicles. This department must also maintain adequate record keeping of all repairs and other maintenance logs.
