for International Study and Travel |
Members of
the Honors Program are required to participate in international study
experiences during their tenure at Southern. A number of established
programs already exist, but current honors students are commonly involved
in designing and arranging new international study programs within
their disciplines.
Among the opportunities available are the Oxford and Cambridge summer
study experiences, as well as the "junior year abroad" program
coordinated by the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP).
With ISEP honors students have studied in England, Scotland, Australia,
Sweden, and Colombia.
Honors students returning from summer study at Oxford or Cambridge
count it one of the experiences of a lifetime. A select group of students
have the opportunity each summer to participate based on their advanced
academic standing for hours accumulated and grade point average. Qualified
students select courses offered in three-week sessions on various
subjects. Southern grants partial scholarships to some students each
year. There is also time for students to enjoy the rich heritage of
England through formal tours and individual excursions.
Southern also has other study abroad opportunities available new ones
are being developed every year. Honors students currently have an
opportunity to study in Mexico, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden, India,
France, and Germany, to name a few.
Great opportunities await those honors students who have the vision
and motivation to travel and study in international settings. Joining
a community of scholars abroad can provide the richest sort of education,
as well as preparation to interact in the global world of work following
graduation. Honors students often lead the way in the international
program at Southern.
