Challenge and Opportunity
The Honors Program at Missouri Southern State University is intended to encourage academic excellence by providing special opportunities and challenges for exceptional students.
In the Honors Program, students have the opportunity to become part of a community of scholars, increasing their awareness of self, culture, and ways of knowing, while developing a sense of positive interdependence with each other and with their Honors professors. Honors scholars have the opportunity to model the ideal university experience—excelling in coursework beyond that available in regular courses; actively participating in other areas of campus life such as cultural events, clubs and athletics; performing community service and international study, with appropriate preparation and post-study reflection; and in their senior year, producing original research or a creative project in their field of study, under the guidance of a professional faculty mentor.
Entrance into the Program is selective, allowing us to place our best students with our best teachers in Honors classes that are normally smaller than regular classes. This permits Honors students to enjoy interaction with other outstanding students in an atmosphere conducive to exciting and challenging discussions and innovative, creative approaches to learning.
Honors scholars receive personal attention, not only from advisors in their academic major, but also from their Honors professors and the Honors Directors, who help them to achieve their academic, professional and personal goals while gaining the best university education available. Expectations for performance in the program are high, but students do not compete with others for grades. Rather, Honors Scholars share a desire to perform at the top of their abilities and an ability to appreciate the opportunity to do so in an environment that is simultaneously fun, exciting and intellectually demanding.
