• Sept. 15, 1998 THE AFRICAN QUEEN (U.S.A., 1952) in color Humphrey Bogart, Katherine Hepburn, Robert Morley, This is John Huston's unique combination of romance, comedy, adventure and spectacular photography which has a charm and a feel for the incongruity of the situation.
• Sept. 29, 1998 JONAH WHO WILL BE 25 IN THE YEAR 2000 (Switzerland, 1976) in color. this is Alain Tanner's funny, far reaching comedy about eight individuals whose paths cross briefly while searching for a common purpose during the political and social upheavals of the late 1960's.
• Oct. 13, 1998 I VITELLONI (THE YOUNG AND THE PASSIONATE) (Italy, 1953) This is Frederico Fellini's autobiographical account of five adolescent loafers in a provincial town who attempt to overcome their boredom by seeking out mischief. Its understanding of the human condition anticipates Amacord which Fellini made two decades later. Prize winner at the the 1953 Berlin Festival.
• Oct. 27, 1998 A DAY IN THE COUNTRY (UNE PARTIE DE CAMPAGNE) (France, 1936) As an unfinished period piece, Jean Renoir created this eloquent study of a family outing. it is a homage to his father Auguste Renoir, the impressionis painter. Also ECSTASY Czechoslovakia, 1933) Once noted for Hedy Lamar's nude scene, this erotic yet tasteful film is a fine example of expressionism replete with symbolic imagery, which alternately celebrates the beauties of nature and its teenaged star.
• Nov. 10, 1998 YOUNG TORLESS (DER JUNGE TORLESS)(Germany, 1966) Volker Schlondorff directed this gripping adaptation of Robert Musil's novel about sadism and incipient fascism in a German boarding school. As one of the post-war New wave films, it won eight festival prizes.
• Feb 16, 1999 I WAS BORN BUT . . . (YMARETE WA MITA KEREDO) (Japan, 1932) Yasujiro Ozu's comedy of the silent era draws its humor from the foibles of ordinary people caught unawares by the camera. Its approach is refreshingly different from that used in Western silent comedy. Also SYMPHONY OF A CITY ( RHYTHM OF A CITY) (Sweden, 1947) Arne Sucksdorff made this brilliant short documentary portrait of Stockholm. Academy Award winner 1948.
• Mar. 3, 1999 ADOPTION (OROKBEFOGADAS)(Hungary, 1975) The renown woman filmmaker Marta Meszaros created this memorable film. it concerns a lonely widow who, unable to find love, befriends a troubled girl and adopts a child. Winner of the Grand Prix at Berlin
• Mar. 16, 1999 STATE OF SIEGE ( ESTAT DE SIEGE)(France, 1973) in color Constantin Costa-Gavras directed this provocative, highly controversial, based-on-fact, drama about the kidnapping of an American diplomat in Uruguay. It is effective both as political cinema and as a thriller.
• Mar. 30, 1999 MAN IN A COCKED HAT (Great Britain, 1958). Peter Sellers, Terry Thomas. Abunglind official gets trapped in a power struggle within a tiny kingdom in this delightful spoof on high level British diplomacy and "banana republics
• Apr. 13, 1999 THE RAINBOW (RADUGA)(Russia, 1944).Mark Donskoi directed this anti-Nazi film which details, with tremendous realism, the suffering of a Ukrainian farm village during 30 days of occupation. as a study of partisan resistance it strongly influenced filmakers of the Italian Neorealist movement resulting in such master work as as Open City.
