Student Awards

Faculty of the Department annually recognize outstanding English majors at the annual Student Awards Banquet held in the spring of every year.  Awards are of two types:  faculty nominated and competitive.

 

Faculty Nominated

  • Outstanding English Major (B.A.)—The oldest departmental award, this award recognizes the outstanding BA student for scholarship and service.

  • Outstanding English Education Major (Greef Award)—The Robert J. Greef Award was established in honor of the former president of the Missouri Association of Teachers of English.  This award is given annually to the outstanding English Education major at participating universities and colleges in Missouri, and also honors the outstanding BSE English major at MSSC.

  • Albert Storm Award—Endowed by Patricia Storm Broyles (BA 1974) in honor of her father, this award recognizes the achievements of BA students planning professional, non-teaching careers.  The award carries a cash stipend of $100.

  • Henry Morgan Award—Endowed by Dr. Henry (Bud) Morgan, this award goes to the most promising prospective teacher (BA or BSE).  It carries a cash stipend of $100.

  • Nadean Harder Medal—Endowed by Dr. Henry Harder in honor of his mother, this award recognizes excellence in Medieval/Renaissance studies.

  • George White Award—Established by Dr. Bill Kumbier to honor the memory of George White, made to the student who most exemplifies enthusiasm and love for the discipline of English.

Competitive Awards:  Students submit their written works for judging by panels of faculty.  Some of these awards carry cash prizes.

  • Lucille Dinges Award—Established and endowed by Dr. Jimmy Couch in memory of Lucille Dinges, former MSSC English faculty, for excellence in criticism and research.  It recognizes the student who submits the best critical scholarly paper for judging.

  • Langston Hughes Award—Endowed by Dr. Henry (Bud) Morgan and the Afro-American Society for excellence in creative writing (fiction or poetry).

  • Bernard McCormick Award—Established in memory of former MSSC English and Philosophy professor Bernard McCormick, this award recognizes the best paper on a philosophical topic.  It carries a cash stipend of $50.

  • Charles R. & Margaret Couch/Henry R. & Frances Hejl Award—Established and endowed by Dr. Jimmy Couch in honor of his and his wife's parents, retired ranchers, for the best writing on a western American theme.  It carries a cash award of $100.
