LARRY DUNHAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Application Procedures

 

 

The Larry Dunham Memorial Scholarship fund is endowed in memory of Larry Dunham to aid outstanding English majors in earning their bachelor s degrees.  It is a merit award made to two rising senior English majors, one a BA major, the other a BSE major.  Two awards shall be made in the spring of 2002 for the 2002-03 academic year in the amount of $650 apiece.

 

Eligibility for the Award.

 

1.      Completion of at least 90 hours of college work toward the first bachelor s degree before the beginning of the fall semester of the senior year

2.       A grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

 

3.      Intent to graduate either in May or July of the senior year.

 

Assembling the Application Materials.  The applicant must submit all of the following information in order to complete the process.

 

q       A letter of intent, written by the applicant, in which the applicant announces intent to apply and expresses merit and qualifications for consideration.

 

q       A resum .

q       Two letters of recommendation from English professors, describing the student s strengths as shown in their classes.  Applicants must request the recommending professors to submit the letters of recommendation directly to the Dunham Scholarship Committee, in care of the department head, English & Philosophy.

 

q       A portfolio of prior work, composed of an introduction and a minimum of four pieces written for courses.  If the applicant desires, one or more non-curricular items may be added.  Suggested contents of the portfolio:

 

         An introduction to the portfolio, in which the candidate explains reasons for selecting the pieces and what each one of them shows about his or her development as an English major.

         Documents from courses, demonstrating a range of modes and purposes at the lower and upper levels of the curriculum.  The pieces must be from more than one course.  Some examples follow:

 

1.      Formal Expository Essays

2.      Response Essays

3.      Summaries of Journal Articles

4.      Research Essays

5.      Position Papers

6.      Presentations

7.      Fiction & Poetry

 

         Documents from non-curricular sources [Optional]:

 

1.      Fiction, Poetry, Scripts, and Other Creative Work

2.      Miscellaneous Written Pieces Demonstrating Talent and Promise

Where to Submit the Materials:  Submit the letter of intent and the portfolio in a folder or large manila envelope to the English & Philosophy secretary, Hearnes 300.

 

Deadline for Application:  The first Friday in April of the academic year prior to the final (senior) year.  The recipients of the award are to be announced before the end of the spring semester. 

 

Responsibilities of the Recipients:  Dunham Scholars will be expected to make a public presentation of some aspect of their work during the last semester of their senior year, normally in the spring semester.  The nature and content of the presentation will be flexible enough to accommodate the interests of the presenters.  Models for these presentations are the Senior Honors presentations and the monthly Academics Anonymous presentations given in recent years.  Examples of such presentations follow:

 

         Delivering a conference-style paper, followed by a response session;

         Teaching a class on particular themes, authors, or works that have captivated them and spurred them to investigations beyond the classroom;

         Reading creative works they have produced;

         Another model, to be determined by consultation between the Dunham Scholar and the Dunham Scholarship Committee.
