In the event of a fire, stay calm and quickly follow the steps outlined below:
1. With a minor fire that appears controllable, immediately contact the Department of Public Safety at extension 2222. Then, discharge the fire extinguisher at the base of the flame. 2. If necessary or if directed to do so by the Department of Public Safety, activate the building alarm. 3. On large fires that do not appear controllable activate the building alarm and immediately contact the Department of Public Safety at extension 2222. Then evacuate all affected rooms and close all doors to confine the fire and reduce oxygen. Do not lock the doors. 4. When the building alarm is sounded or when told to leave by the Department of Public Safety, walk quickly to the nearest marked exit and alert others to do the same. 6. Assist people with disabilities in exiting the building. Do not use elevators during fire. Smoke is the greatest danger in a fire, so stay near the floor where the air will be more breathable. 7. Once outside, move to a clear area away from the affected building. Keep the street and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and personnel. 8. If requested, assist the Department of Public Safety. 9. Do not return to an evacuated building unless directed to do so by the Department of Public Safety.
If you become trapped in a building during a fire and a window is available, place an article of clothing (shirt, coat, etc.) outside the window as a marker for emergency personnel, if there's no window, stay near the floor, where the air will be more breathable. Shout at regular intervals to alert emergency personnel of your location.
Training for fire extinguisher use is available through the Department of Public Safety.
