Communication Scholarships
Opportunities

The Department of Communication offers several opportunities for our students to apply for scholarship money. In addition to the regular financial aid and scholarship programs the following financial opportunities are available through our Department:

RUTH I. KOLPIN BROADCAST JOURNALISM ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Students majoring in Mass Communications with an emphasis on broadcasting benefit from a generous donation establishing an endowed scholarship at Missouri Southern State University. The Ruth I. Kolpin Foundation Board of Directors have approved a scholarship, to be known as the Ruth I. Kolpin Broadcast Journalism Endowed Scholarship Fund. This donation will allow for a substantial annual scholarship for deserving students, to be provided from the income of the principal amount of the endowment. The award recognizes individuals who made significant contributions to the development of the local broadcast industry. In Spring 2007, the Ruth I. Kolpin Foundation Board of Directors generously voted to award two RUTH I. KOLPIN BROADCAST JOURNALISM ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS. They were won by Jarrod Griswold and A. Charles Natividad.

PERFORMANCE AWARDS
A Communication student who has demonstrated success or high potential in Forensics or Journalism may be eligible for a Performance Award in Debate, The Chart, or Crossroads: The Magazine. Each semester the eligible student may apply for awards ranging from $50.00 to a full scholarship consisting of tuition, fees, room and board. The student must apply directly to the director or sponsor of their particular activity.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Broadcast students have the opportunity to apply for scholarships from a number of national and regional organizations. They include the National Broadcasting Society, Missouri Broadcasters Association, and the Broadcast Educators Association. MSSU students have received up to $1000 in scholarship funds in past years from the National Broadcasting Society.

EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNICATION SCHOLARSHIP
The "Excellence in Communication" scholarship has been awarded annually since 1985, when Jean Campbell was the first recipient. The award, in the form of a partial tuition reimbursement, is given on the basis of academic achievement, department and campus involvement, financial need, and future promise. Applications are invited in the month of April, and recipients are announced at the Department's annual banquet.

NATIONAL BROADCASTING SOCIETY
Students in Southern's chapter of this national broadcasting organization have won awards at the regional and national level for the television production work. Others have received scholarship funds from the national organization. In addition, each Spring, students travel to the national convention, where they have an opportunity to meet professionals in the field of broadcasting.

KYTV BROADCAST SCHOLARSHIP
Each year KYTV in Springfield, MO awards a $1000 scholarship to two deserving students currently enrolled in broadcasting career related courses. This includes students working on degrees not only in broadcast, but in accounting, marketing, communications, engineering, journalism and mass media, all of which you would find working at any broadcast company.
