The Department of Communication and Department of Foreign Languages

Overview of the Department

Department Timeline

Missouri Southern's Department of Communication was established in 1980 by taking the disciplines of speech and journalism, and forming a unique combination that would become further unique with the addition and development of broadcasting and public relations.

The department strongly believes in creating opportunities for students--opportunities to learn, to express themselves creatively, to have experiences that will be practical in life, and to make decisions. We believe in hand-on experiences with equipment and with fields of study. We want our students to engage in active learning not passive exposure to lectures and presentations. We want our students to participate in the process of education.

The faculty of the department are sincerely dedicated to quality learning by students and quality teaching by faculty.

In fact, they have adopted this Statement of Mission:

Communication centers on the study of the word spoken, printed, translated however transmitted. Study includes a thorough grounding in the conceptual, theoretical, and ethical dimensions of discourse, as well as the development of skills and proficiencies in the practical application of communication principles. The goals are to understand human message sending and receiving processes, to evaluate critically language and evidence, and to manage effectively the expression of ideas.

Communication studies are the inheritor of a long and honored tradition. Since the ancient Greeks, the study of rhetoric (the art of effective discourse) has been recognized as a vital pillar of human learning. It formed one of the seven liberal arts of education in medieval Europe. Modern communication studies focus on persuasion, personal development, organizational and group dynamics, and human relations in a multicultural, multilingual world. Despite technological advances over the centuries, the word remains central to human life.

The faculty is committed to the continual assessment of our programs, to ensure that our students develop communication competencies sought by business, industry, government, education, and the professions. Communication studies can provide the basis for a productive career and a rewarding personal life.

The Department of Communication firmly believes you should GET INVOLVED.

The faculty urges every student to take advantage of the opportunities made available through the print and broadcast media and through organizations in the department and on campus. Students can gain leadership roles and through these roles and active participation learn much more than those who don't participate. You'll also make contacts and begin the process of networking.

So, join The Modern Communications Club, The PRSSA or the Debate Team. Join the staff of the newspaper, the magazine, radio station, and television station. Try out for an editor's position, for a seat on the management board of KGCS. Try out for a managerial position with KGCS. PARTICIPATE!

You'll learn more!
