Declaring A Major Or Minor


DECLARING YOUR MAJOR

All students are required to declare their degree sought and their major (or area of interest). A major provides in-depth study of a discipline and prepares the student for a career or advanced study. The Department of Communication has these Majors: BA in Speech Communication, Mass Communication, and Public Relations, as well as BS degrees in Speech Communication, Mass Communication, Public Relations, and Speech Communication/Theater. When you declare a major in the Communication you will be expected to have an advisor in that area. If you have not already spoken with a faculty member about advising you, the department secretary can assign one for you.

DECLARING YOUR MINOR

The Communication Department developed academic minors that in conjunction with the major, strengthens the student's vocational preparation. A minor requires at least 18 semester hours of prescribed courses. At least six semester hours must be upper division and at least nine semester hours must be in residence. The overall GPA requirements is 2.0. The Department of Communication have the following Minors: Mass Communication, Speech Communication and Public Relations. When you declare a minor, as with declaring a major, you will be expected to have an advisor in that area. If you have not already spoken with a faculty member about advising you, the department secretary can assign one for you.
