Victory sweeter in post-season

Chart Opinion

So the football team lost the U.S. Cellular Miner s Bowl. A record of 4-1 still ain t bad.

The final score against Pitt State may have ended up as 50-12, but that is not an indicator of how the Lions played the entire game.

Overall, Missouri Southern had six turnovers. But only one of those came in the first half. At halftime the Lions went into the locker room down by only 10 points, 22-12. The outcome seemed like it could be positive for Southern.

Although the second half did not go so well, we would like to think the first half of the game, as well as the previous four games, was a true reflection of the team.

Both the Lions and the Gorillas went into the Miner s Bowl under plenty of pressure. Both teams were undefeated at 4-0. Pitt State had a long-standing win streak to protect at its place this year on a brand new, fancy field. Southern, however, may have had to carry an even heavier load.

The Lions were playing away from home against the No. 3 Division II team in the nation. And with a record of 4-0 for the first time since 1996, the Lions had higher expectations. After several not-so-great seasons, they probably wanted this to be their breakthrough game.

But the Miner s Bowl seems to cause hype like this every year. Southern will move on.

Besides, if the Lions make it to the post-season and face the Gorillas, wouldn t a victory then be that much sweeter?

Saturday, Southern travels to Northwest Missouri State University who, like Pitt State, is also undefeated at 5-0. Rest assured, the Lions will not give up. Why should the rest of us? Continue to attend the games and support the College. Fans are a part of the team, too.
