Focused on becoming fluent in French, Jeremy Goins, senior pre-med major, decided to spend fall 2002 in France.

Goins leaves Sept. 21 to spend the semester taking French at Sorbonne, a branch of the University of Paris. Dr. Maryann Weber, professor of communications, said Goins worked out the arrangements for his study-abroad program.

"I'm really impressed with his initiative in finding a study-abroad program that met his interests," Weber said.

Goins will be taking an independent study course from Weber while he's in Paris, along with an Internet course. He said the Southern hours combined with the number of credits he will receive from taking French five hours a day amounts to about 30 credit hours this semester.

Goins has been to France before with Missouri Southern's summer Orleans program and was able to spend five days in Paris. He said that's when he decided he wanted to spend a whole semester there.

"That's where all the excitement is," Goins said.

He plans to stay at an apartment he found near the university. He will share the apartment with other international students.

Weber said Goins received a grant from the Institute of International Studies to help pay for airfare and other costs, but he will have to pay for most of his expenses himself.

Goins believes getting involved with campus life makes college more fun. He has held many offices at Southern. Among other things, he's been treasurer and president of Student Senate, served two years on the Academic Affairs Policy Committee, and been Webmaster for the Campus Activities Board.

Now, Goins said he wants to concentrate on increasing his language abilities in French.

"I really am just insecure and not very confident in my level of conversation," he said.

He hopes spending a few months in France will make him feel comfortable speaking French and also help him to learn about the culture.

Weber said Goins will have spent enough hours learning French to make it one of his majors.

"He is a very serious student, and he is also a student with great leadership potential," she said. "I wish him great luck."
