House
Party allows students to compete in freestyle contest Staff Writer On
Sept. 21, about 70 students attended House Party 2002 at the Student
Life Center. The
party, held by Southern Impact, began at 10 p.m. and ran until 2 a.m.
Once through the door, most of the party goers danced to the music
played by two live DJs. Others stood around and talked with friends. At
11 p.m., food was served for everyone s pleasure. Dishes included
baked beans, macaroni and cheese, ribs and chicken. Pop and water were
available to drink. It
turned out real great, said David Collins, sophomore secondary
education major. [It was] a good time and [anyone who came] should
have no regret in coming. During
the night, a contest was held for freestyle rap artists. The contest,
judged by the audience, had four contestants who had 45 seconds to
spit and no profane or suggestive language would be tolerated.
Chris Dunlap, junior business administration major at Pittsburg State
University, won the contest and received a check for $25. This
was my first official battle, and it really boosts my confidence,
Dunlap said. It lets me know I can do it again. He
also thanked Jesus Christ for his talent. Another
contest held was the twirking contest. Three ladies entered, and
Jennifer Rhodes of Miami, Okla., won. She received a $25 gift
certificate to Victoria s Secret and $50 cash. Rhodes had no comment. There
was a $3 cover charge to get into the party, and most everybody was
frisked before passing through the door. The proceeds from the party
will go to benefit the United Way. Those
that went home [this weekend] should have stayed here, Collins said. |
