Lady
Lions prime for league title Staff Writer Lady
Lions soccer continues its season with a game at 4 p.m. Tuesday at
Central Missouri State University. We
started off the season fantastic, and we re improving every game,
said Geoff VanDeusen, head coach. We have high goals this year, and
we want to make sure we maintain those aspirations. He
said the Lady Lions have had great team play and received standout
performances from Ashley Munnelly, Terressa Kusick and Alicia Givens. Missouri
Southern is 5-1 this year, with its only loss coming from the University
of Nebraska-Omaha. In
our game against Nebraska-Omaha, we came out very flat and we were
intimidated, VanDeusen said. I think we just need to remember we
have great talent, and we can play at that level. That
loss is definitely something we can learn from and use in our future
games. Southern
bounced back by defeating the University of Missouri-Rolla Lady Miners,
8-2, on Sept. 18. The Lady Lions started the game with a goal at 1:50 in
the first half. UMR came back with two straight goals at 2:15 and 3:57
of the first half. Goalkeeper Shannon Brosnahan stopped a penalty kick
by the Lady Miners at 51:07 in the second half. Southern then proceeded
to score six unanswered goals. The game was stopped by Rolla coaches at
86:58 in the second half. This
game was a great way to come back from a loss, VanDeusen said. We
started off a little inconsistent, and Rolla was tough. The
turning point of the game was when Shannon Brosnahan stopped the penalty
kick in the second half. From there, we took off. We
played really hard in the second half, said Becky Sloan, sophomore
midfielder. This was a big conference win. VanDeusen
said the MIAA is wide open this year, and anyone can win. He said the
team which wins the league title could possibly have three or four
conference losses. He said the teams to beat in the conference this year
are Truman State and Central Missouri State. Tuesday s
game against CMSU is a huge game for us because they were picked to
finish second in our conference, VanDeusen said. We just need to
focus on that game and play tough. The
Lady Lions were a preseason pick to finish third in the conference.
VanDeusen said with the way they ve been playing, they have a good
shot to win the conference championship. We
have a good defense and hard workers in the middle, he said. With
that combination, we re good to go. The
key to our season is to continue to put the team first. We need to take
it one game at a time. |
