What
will the United States gain by attacking Iraq? President
George W. Bush claims he wants to invade Iraq because of Saddam
Hussein s arms violations and because of the mistreatment of the Iraqi
people. Yes,
the Iraqi people are suffering under the tyranny of Hussein s rule.
But what good will it do to destroy their homeland and make their
situation even more miserable? Why not help the people instead? And
it s not a coincidence that a president with a very similar name did a
very similar thing a little more than a decade ago. A joke has been
going around, which says Bush should wait until Father s Day to attack
Iraq because it would be a good gift. The joke has so much truth, it s
almost not funny. If we were going to take care of Hussein, we should
have finished the job years ago. Bush
refuses to listen to the people. While many citizens cry out for peace,
he turns a deaf ear and demands military action. Americans
are not the only people Bush is ignoring. Virtually no other nation
supports the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Some countries have even threatened
to turn against us if we do so. By
a near 6-to-4 ratio, a recent CNN poll found the British people think
Bush is more of a threat to world peace than Hussein. When the United
States can t even get Great Britain on its side, we have got to know
something is wrong. Most
disappointing of all, however, has to be the president s denial of his
own citizens. While a country mourns the lives lost just a little more
than a year ago in the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy, he plans to perpetuate
violence. Inarguable,
the United States has the best and most powerful military in the world.
Instead of showing off that strength for personal vendettas, however, we
should preserve this precious commodity. |
