It s
hard to believe an entire year has passed since Sept. 11, 2001. We have
moved on, yet our lives are completely changed. We
can no longer think of our nation as a safe haven from terrorist
attacks. This country learned all too well that no matter how powerful
it is, anyone is susceptible to the effects of anger and hatred. The
sleeping giant was awakened by the little guys who despised our way of
life. Before Sept. 11 of last year, we lived like we were invincible.
Pop culture defined this nation. But, we discovered freedom and unity
mattered much more than MTV and Pepsi ads. Strangely,
though, everyone was encouraged to go back to living the way we did
before Sept. 11. Spend money, help the economy, be happy, love our
capitalistic lives. And
we shouldn t change completely. The United States seems to be
prospering pretty well, just the way it is. We
should never forget, however, that hate for our society is why the
attacks occurred. But rather than returning hate and creating more
injustice, we should try to understand the differences throughout all
the nations, races and religions. After all, diversity makes the world
go round. Breeding
tolerance will make the healing process easier and faster. We
can also never again take our freedoms for granted. Liberties are what
make the United States great, and now we can fully appreciate this
greatness. |
