CAB has decided 'very little' since start of school

On Sept. 9, the Campus Activities Board held its weekly meeting in the Billingsly Student Center, Room 310.

There were several issues brought up at this meeting which had been previously discussed on Aug. 28.

Since the time for meetings is at noon, several students want to see lunch provided, because it had been done before. The decision to have two lunches every month was discussed due to a number of students eating and not everyone being involved.

There was a proposal made by Dr. Kexi Liu, assistant professor of music and director of the Suzuki Violin Academy. Liu is bringing a group of approximately 35 youth from The Shanghai Conservatory of Music in China to Southern to provide a free concert for students, faculty and the community. The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 in Taylor Auditorium. Liu came to the CAB asking for funding to provide for the students  expenses and asked for $800.

A decision was made to give $500 to help fund the concert. The total cost for the concert is anywhere from $1,600-$1,800 for all the travel and other needs of the students. Local families will pick up room and board for the students traveling from St. Louis.

This will be a great opportunity for everyone,  Liu said.

Some stops prior to the College include Los Angeles, Memphis and St. Louis.

Another issue which had been discussed was the  second week  of the fall semester, which is Natural High Week, Sept. 9-13. These activities are sponsored by CAB, Residence Life, Campus Recreation and Wellness, and the Student Support Center. Some activities included Info Booths/Stress Buster Area, Memorial Ceremony for 9-11, free massages in the coffee shop and Lions Den, and a Comedy City and Club Night in the BSC.

In other business, a report from the concert committee was given by David Kenny, committee chair. Kenny proposed a few ideas for some concerts to be brought to the College. There were discussions about where the concerts should be held and when; two dates in October, the 15th and 17th, were discussed. Other than concerts, a rap night/comedy night and an acoustic night/coffee house night were some other entertainment students may look forward to. Other committees include Novelty, Lectures, Trips, Family Events, and Publicity and Promotion. However, no reports were given from these committees.

Adele Thompson, junior executive for Web master/PR and Publicity, announced her resignation at the meeting. Thompson will be serving on the Student Senate as one of eight junior class representatives.

Julie Blackford, director of student activities, said she understands where Thompson is coming from, and wants to turn the focus on programming for the CAB.

Blackford said almost a month of school has gone by already, and CAB has  done very little.  Due to some uneasiness from students in CAB, Blackford is encouraging any student willing to participate in CAB to attend meetings every Monday at noon. Lunch will be provided two times a month. The next CAB meeting is at noon, Monday in the BSC, third floor.
