Treasurer
urges caution with spending Associate Editor
It
may be time to tighten the purse strings, a Student Senate officer
implied Oct. 2. At
the start of the Senate meeting, Andrew McGowan, treasurer, urged
senators to heed the dangers of overspending. The Senate on Sept. 25
allocated $2,400 - about 15 percent of its semester budget - to three
organizations. Missouri Southern allocated $17,000 to the Senate at the
beginning of the semester. At
this rate we will be out of money in six weeks, McGowan said. He
said the finance committee will try to uphold a policy limiting
allocations to $100 per student, not to exceed $1,000 per organization.
On Sept. 25, the Senate ignored this policy 16-12 by allocating $1,000
to six members of the Collegiate Middle Level Association. We re
trying to keep to the $100 per person limit and not pay for frivolous
trips, McGowan said. They need to have educational value. There
are certain clubs who want us to pay for their gas to travel the U.S.
for no reason, and that s not going to happen this year. The
Senate allocated a total of $1,300 this week, including $1,000 to 15-20
members of the Student Nursing Association for a mid-year nursing
conference to be held in Kansas City. The other $300 was offered as
reimbursement for a Philosophy Club trip held last year in Jefferson
City. In
other business, Sarah Seibert, middle school education major, was
appointed to fill a senior vacancy on the Senate. Zack Odem, president,
said persons wishing to be appointed to the Senate should attend the
meeting Oct. 9. Meetings
are held 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday in the House of Lords Room on the
third floor of the Billingsly Student Center. |
