Students
earn kinesiology credit underwater Staff Writer Students
at Missouri Southern are able to earn their kinesiology credit without
stepping foot on campus. Calypso
Scuba and Ski, Joplin's largest water and sports facility, is offering
credit for students to learn the fundamentals of diving. Valerie
Earl, manager and instructor, said the pool located inside Calypso is
much deeper and warmer than the pool at Southern. Also, the business
hopes enough students will show interest and it can plan a trip for
spring break, allowing students an opportunity to dive in the ocean. "I
think that it is awesome," said Kerry Clark, sophomore music
education major. "It's great for students. The
program has been in action since the shop opened a year and a half ago,
but it is now starting to get things rolling. Students are awarded one
hour of credit and diving certification upon completion of the course. "This
program is good for public relations for the company," said Erin
Downing, sophomore undecided major. During
the class, students learn the basic skills to become a safe diver.
Cleaning the mask and regulator, scuba systems removal, safe entries and
sharing air are a few of the skills taught throughout the class. Two
large classrooms and an indoor pool are all located in the building.
Each class holds 4-6 students to encourage one-on-one time with the
instructor. Instructors consist of both male and female to increase the
satisfaction of class participants. The
cost of the course will cover all educational materials, certification
and a diploma. The
Recreational Scuba Training Council of America approves all
certifications for Calypso, which allows the students certifications
to be acknowledged wherever they plan to travel. Calypso provides all
the equipment needed for the class. Students must purchase a mask,
snorkel, boots and fins. Chris
Evans, assistant instructor, said Calypso hopes to take the class to
Cozumel, Mexico, for spring break, but this depends on the students and
where they want to go. Evening
and Saturday classes are available and last from three and a half to
four and a half hours. |
