Helping women cope with everyday hassles in their professional and personal life is the goal of a new club on campus.

Maria Wimberly, junior business and economics major, came up with the idea of the Women in Business Club. Being a non-traditional student with a family at home, she said she's aware of the difficulties women face balancing daily activities.

"Women have a few more challenges than men do," she said. "Being a professional, being a wife and being a mother is difficult."

She said the Women in Business Club is not chartered yet because it lacks the eligible number of members. Missouri Southern's policy requires clubs to have at least 20 members before the College will recognize it. The group of 18 supporters convened for the first time Sept. 26.

All areas of study are welcome. Wimberly said the club is not only for business majors.

Connie Brewer, business instructor and adviser of the club, said she wants this to be a campus-wide group.

"We want a diverse group, and that will make us unique," Brewer said. "I'm excited; we've got a good club on our hands."

Wimberly said men are welcome to join the party, too.

"Guys can come if they want to gain some insight," she said. "If they're brave enough."

The group is planning to meet again at 12:15 Thursday, Oct. 31 in Matthews Hall, Room. 213. Lunch will be provided.

"We want this to be a low-key group where we can discuss things and provide support," Wimberly said.

Along with monthly meetings, the club will host a guest speaker. She said the speaker will be a professional who will provide insight into the qualms of being a woman in the work force.

"This is also a way to meet more people," Wimberly said. "I hope to create a network through each other that will last past graduation. Also, we can create a network through the professionals we meet each month."
