Southern
strikers try to restart defense after loss Assistant Sports Editor
Although
the Lions soccer team might have lost two games in a row, they are
looking to stay on the prowl with a game against Midwestern State
University Friday. We re
real close to winning games, said Geoff VanDeusen, head coach.
It s hard when playing against teams with more scholarships, but we
just need to keep plugging away. In
Southern s game against Quincy University Oct. 13, the Lions lost 3-2.
Southern had a 2-1 lead at one time, but they could not hold it as
Quincy scored two unanswered goals. In the game, the Lions lost the
shooting battle 24-7. They also committed 26 fouls to Quincy s 18.
Freshman defender Zac Zalewski scored two goals and junior goalkeeper
Cesar Vazquez had 10 saves. The loss brought the Lions to 4-5-1 for the
season. It
was a hard fought game against Quincy, VanDeusen said. We sure
didn t get any help from the officials, but we also had problems
generating opportunities. I was also disappointed with the way Quincy
scored because we had worked in practice to prevent the kinds of goals
Quincy scored. Lately,
I think we ve been playing very well, Zalewski said. I think we
played well enough in our losses to win, we just came up a little
short. VanDeusen
said the team is trying to improve on their defense and the goals they
give up in the penalty area. In
order to start another win streak, I would say we need to get the
offense rolling again, Zalewski said. If our defense steps up like
we had been in our previous streak, it will lead us to scoring goals. VanDeusen
said the next game will be tough against Midwestern State. They
are ranked 13th, I think, so it will be a good test for us, he said.
We have to generate scoring opportunities given to us. Zalewski
said, It is important that we finish on the balls that are in the
(penalty) box. I think we need to continue to take it game by game, VanDeusen said. We have to continue to strive to be better. |
