Events offer enriching opportunity

Chart Opinion

Each and every student at Missouri Southern has the opportunity to enrich his or her education through various events offered by the College.

But it seems as though many students are not capitalizing on the opportunity.

Events such as the Gockel Symposium and the India Semester seminars provide essential information about different cultures.

The Scott Ritter lecture,  The Coming War With Iraq: How Did We Get Here?,  gave the College, as well as the community, a localized look at a pressing world issue. While some 900 people attended the lecture in Taylor Auditorium, unfortunately, the majority in attendance were not Southern students. Students Advocating Government Awareness kept count of how many students attended and came up with approximately 300.

Ritter said Americans  have to recognize we live in a very dangerous time  and the members of the military will be entering a war of  death and destruction.

Ritter also said everyone has  a duty and responsibility  to learn all they can about this issue. Many of the people fighting for the United States will be the same age as most college students. Southern students, therefore, have an extra responsibility to learn all they can.

According to Ritter, Americans must leave their  cocoon of comfort  and realize that, as Americans, they are accountable for the nation s fate. After all, this is  a government of the people, by the people, for the people.

All Southern students pay an activity fee each semester to fund events like this lecture sponsored by the Campus Activities Board. Students should take advantage of that payment and make their money worthwhile by attending these events.

More importantly, as college students, all should voluntarily attend to further their education. Events like these are an excellent opportunity.
