Senate
plans street names Associate Editor
The
wheels are in motion for the naming of the streets on campus, Zack Odem,
Student Senate president, announced Oct. 23. Odem
said the Senate will name 13 different streets on campus. He said the
project will be funded by either the physical plant or the Senate, or
some combination thereof. The entire project - street signs and
concrete - is expected to cost around $1,000, Odem said. Andrew
McGowan, treasurer, said he hopes the Senate does fund at least a
portion of the project. We
will be doing it (the naming), but it would mean more if we actually put
funds behind it, he said. The
street naming committee will meet Monday, where each member will suggest
five street names. The committee will choose its 13 favorite names and
bring them before a vote of the Senate. Students
with ideas for street names should bring them to the Student Services
office, Billingsly Student Center, Room 211, no later than Nov. 4. Odem
said the committee will not consider naming any streets after people for
possible future fund-raising purposes. For
the second consecutive week, the Senate did not hear any allocation
requests from campus organizations. McGowan said this is probably
because most groups are waiting until the spring semester. However,
the Senate will hear a $400 request from the Collegiate Music Educators
National Convention. The group will hold a party Oct. 29 for recruitment
purposes. We ll
see about that, McGowan said. My motto is everybody gets
less. McGowan
said there is $11,800 remaining in the treasury this semester. The
Senate is on pace for a $6,600 budget surplus going into the spring
semester, with five meetings left in the fall. The
College traditionally allocates an extra $8,000 to the Senate treasury
for the spring semester. |
