Lions
'fight like crazy' to defeat Golden Eagles, 5-1 Assistant Sports Editor
Lions
soccer has a new goal this season: win the rest of its games. We
want to put some more Ws on the board, said Geoff VanDeusen,
head coach. We d like to win the rest of our games, and we believe
that is very possible. In
its game Oct. 18 against Midwestern State University, Southern lost 2-1
to an undefeated MSU squad ranked 10th in the nation going into the
game. Midwestern scored the first goal at 58:45 of the first half, but
the Lions came back with a goal by freshman midfielder Patrick Hill. The
game was tied 1-1 until MSU scored on a penalty kick. Junior goalkeeper
Cesar Vazquez had 9 saves on 26 shots by Midwestern State. I
think we re a goal score away from being a good contender,
VanDeusen said. We need someone to step up and score for us. We need
to fight like crazy to win. VanDeusen
said the team has been difficult to score against in the past few games. We re
working on finishing and playing quickly, he said. We ve got to
clean up a few things on our attack, but I think the guys are optimistic
about our future. After
the loss to MSU, Southern bounced back with a 5-1 win over NAIA school
John Brown University Oct. 22. Southern scored three straight goals at
18:59, 25:14 and 47:38 in the first half. JBU would not answer with a
goal until 68:32 in the second half, which brought the score to 3-1. The
Lions scored two more goals at 83:24 and 86:57 in the second half to
seal the victory. Sophomore midfielder Lucas Silva had two goals and an
assist. Vazquez added eight saves in the game. Southern s win brings
its record to 5-6-1. We
controlled the game with our passing, Silva said. If we keep
playing with this kind of intensity, we ll keep winning games. VanDeusen
said the win gives the guys confidence and it keeps them
focused on their goal of winning the rest of their games. Southern s next game will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bodon Field against Rockhurst University. |
