Indian
cuisine easy to fix Executive/Online Editor
Indian
cuisine, a rarity in Joplin, may now be closer than ever before. As
close as your home kitchen, actually. The
Indian Cookbook,
by Shehzad Husain, is a thorough guide to Indian cooking styles and
techniques. It also includes several helpful features for persons who
are not familiar with the ingredients and tools used in Indian cooking. For
example, there is a lengthy section on the ingredients used in the book.
From herbs and spices, to fruits and vegetables, the guide covers
anything you could think of. However,
one thing to be wary of with Indian food, at least in this part of the
country, is finding certain ingredients. Cardamom pods, in particular,
can be difficult to find. Along with asafoetida, an extremely rare spice
in this part of the country, and saffron, while not difficult to find,
runs up to $20 a pop. One
of the best bets is calling a speciality food store to check and see if
it happens to have what you need in stock. If it doesn t, many times
the store can order it for you. And if a store can t, there s always
the Internet. In fact, many people swear by Internet spice shops.
However, one thing to always watch out for when buying online is time. If
you re buying spices online, allow at least a week for delivery,
unless, you want to spend a small fortune on overnight shipping. Also, keep in mind that most Indian food is extremly spicy. The spices can be toned down, but it is important to keep in mind.
