Rain, cold didn't dampen Homecoming dreams

With the many events during the week of Homecoming 2002, the week came to an end with the coronation of the new Homecoming king and queen.

Christopher Crabtree and Seafha Blount of the Native American Student Association were crowned during halftime at the Missouri Southern football game against Missouri Western.

Blount said she  really enjoyed campaigning and meeting new people.  She said NASA s goal was to get its name out and get some new members.

I was so convinced that I wasn t going to win,  Blount said.  I was astonished when they announced my name as the new queen.

Although the week might have been fun, it may have ended on a sour note for some on Nov. 2, with Southern losing the football game, 28-7 to Western.

It was very cold at the football game,  said Shonna Sherrell, junior physical education major.  I thought the outcome of the game could have been better because there were a lot of missed opportunities [by Southern].

Highlights from activities during the week of Oct. 28 included a game show on Tuesday in Billingsly Student Center called  Think Fast  where the winner could receive $200 in cash. Also taking place on Tuesday night was the Southern talent show in Taylor Auditorium. First place in individual competition went to Jason Edgar, and Koinonia took first place in the group competition.

I thought most of the talent show was pretty funny,  said Jeremy Hollingshead, junior economics major.  Some of the people were pretty talented. All in all, it was a fun event.

The next day started off with  Make Your Own Music Video  in BSC. On Wednesday night,  Casino Night  went on in the Lions  Den, which was sponsored by Student Senate and the Residence Hall Association. Students could pay money for gambling chips and try to win prizes. All proceeds from the event went to the United Way.

Thursday saw the all-campus picnic take place in BSC. It was planned to take place outside on the oval, but it was moved inside due to rain.

I enjoyed seeing students get involved,  said Julie Blackford, director of student activities.  The picnic was still a good time even though it had to be moved inside.

Spider-Man and Triple X were shown in Legget & Platt Athletic Center on Nov. 1. The event was sponsored by the Campus Activities Board and Campus Recreation. Concessions sold at the event were to raise money for the United Way.

I was very pleased with attendance and student participation,  Blackford said.  Despite the weather not cooperating, I still considered Homecoming [2002] to be a success.
