talks street names Associate Editor
Streets on campus may be named as soon as Feb. 11, Zack Odem, Student Senate president, reported Nov. 20. During a special meeting of the street naming committee, held immediately after the regular session, Odem said his goal is to have the placement of the street signs coincide with the completion of the crosswalks lighting project. Odem said the committee s suggestions have already been submitted to the administration. He said he hopes to get the project started as soon as possible. The committee s street name recommendations are as follows: Mission Hills Lane, Green and Gold Boulevard, Lion Pride Lane, University Parkway, Southern Boulevard, Lantern Drive, International Avenue (or Parkway), Mansion Drive, Stadium Drive, Victory Lane and Scenic Drive. A short debate was held over the manner in which the street signs should be funded. Odem said he expects the project to cost slightly more than $1,000. He suggested the Senate should allocate $1,000 to the project, and the physical plant should pay the remainder. Some committee members said the Senate should fund the entire project, while others said the Senate should pay as little as possible. Odem said he will have a more clear funding picture after he hears back from the administration. In other business, the Senate allocated $1,000 to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for a Christmas party for area underprivileged children. The rules were suspended so the Senate could move immediately to the second reading of the request. Amber Phipps, FCA president, said the money will be used to help buy presents, wrapping paper and dinner for the children. The meeting was the final business meeting of the semester. The Senate treasury balance is now $10,650, and the administration traditionally allocates an additional $8,000 to the Senate for the spring semester. The Senate will meet again Wednesday, Dec. 4 to sing Christmas songs to residents at area nursing homes. The Senate Christmas party will be held immediately afterward at Pizza by Stout. |
