Winter movie previews

Classes are starting to wind down a bit and Christmas break (no school   all right!) is coming rather quickly.

With both of those things happening, students are given something they are deprived of throughout the semester, that mythical free time. So what are you going to do with all that extra time you have to spare? Obviously, studying is not an option (even if you do have finals), and you can t work all the time. So why not go to the movies?

There are actually some decent movies coming out this winter. Of course, there are also some really poor movies coming out. Oh well, let s go and see what s coming out.

Eight Crazy Nights

Nov. 27, 2002

I feel kind of weird talking about a cartoon that is coming out, but this looks like it is going to be a lot different from the usual corny Walt Disney ones that have been released lately. In fact, this one is not even made by Disney. What sets it apart from all the other cartoons, though, is the voice behind the three main characters. That voice is Adam Sandler. This fact in itself makes the movie at least somewhat enticing to movie goers.

The movie is basically about a troublemaker named Davey Stone (voice of Sandler) who finally pushes the limits too far. He gets the choice between going to jail or doing community service at a youth basketball league as the assistant referee. He feels like he won, until he meets the head referee Whitey Duvall (also the voice of Sandler).

Basically, the movie looks hilarious. It seems to be something new for Sandler, rather than the usually slap-stick humor he is known for. Everyone who enjoys a good comedy should definitely put this movie on their  to see  list. Also, the movie features a new version of the  Hanukkah  song by Sandler.

Solaris

Nov. 27, 2002

Science fiction meets a love story meets something else. This movie stars George Clooney as a psychologist who goes to a space station. He is investigating the way the planet Solaris is affecting the few remaining members of the space crew. As he investigates, he discovers his wife is on the space station also, except that she supposedly died years ago.

This movie seems pretty corny and boring to me. Of course, with Clooney in the starring role, what else can one expect? It sounds like it is seriously lacking action, so I am having trouble understanding if this is supposed to be a science fiction piece, a romance or a mystery. Whatever it is, it sounds exceptionally uninteresting. It is definitely not a movie that I would wasted seven bucks and a Friday or Saturday night to see.

The Hot Chick

Dec. 13, 2002

With Rob Schneider as the leading role, this movie is pretty well guaranteed to be a hilarious flick. Of course, you ll probably have to shoulder past all the high schoolers that are going to be in the theater also. But that s OK.

The movie is basically about a stuck-up teen-age girl who is used to getting whatever she wants. Then, suddenly, a curse is placed on her and she becomes, well, a he, a 30-year-old at that. As she tries to get herself changed back, she discovers just how she was to everyone around her.

This movie actually seems to have a positive message to it, but no one is really going to watch it for that. It looks like an absolutely hilarious movie. Besides, guys, there are some pretty hot chicks in it too. That always helps make it worthwhile to take a date.

Star Trek: Nemesis

Dec. 13, 2002

Same crew, same starship, same basic plot for the movie. The only thing that is new to this seems to be the bad guys. Granted, I m a Star Trek fan, but there are only so many movies and television shows they can make before they start getting redundant.

This new one stars the cast from  The Next Generation.  Of course, they are on a diplomatic mission for the Federation. They come to an alien planet and discover a threat that could destroy the Earth. The new threat is supposedly the crew s most dangerous  nemesis  (hence the name) yet.

Wow, that doesn t really make me want to run and see the movie. It seriously sounds like every other Star Trek movie ever made, as well as most of the television shows. The sexual content scene that is listed in the description will probably be the most new and interesting part to the whole film.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Dec. 18, 2002

I really don t know what to say about this except that it s about damned time it came out. Granted, the last movie in the trilogy just came out in theaters last year and on DVD/VHS this summer. But I think all fantasy movie fans have been waiting for this upcoming sequel to The Fellowship of the Ring.

For those of you who don t know what this film is about, here goes. The storyline follows the fellowship as it splits up to take quests in different directions. Frodo and Sam are fighting their way to destroy the ever powerful ring. Aragorn and his group of travelers are trying to rescue Pippin and Merry, the hobbits taken during the final battle scene of the first movie. And Gandalf comes back to join the crew.

This is a definite must-see movie. It looks like it will be as great, if not better, than the first one. The graphics of the film are absolutely amazing, and there seems to be more battle scenes, which just adds to the movie s incredibility. Go see the movie. You will not be disappointed.
