Chapman breaks record Sports Editor
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon. Shine on Josh Chapman. On Nov. 16, the Missouri Southern Lions traveled to the University of Missouri-Rolla and defeated the Miner s, 49-25. Bill Cooke, head football coach, said earlier this game was a game that could mean people s careers if they don t win. One of these persons is senior quarterback, Chapman. Chapman ran for 246 yards and also passed for 246 yards during the game, thus receiving 5,568 yards on 484 of 907 passing with 45 touchdowns and 3,233 rushing yards on 602 carries and 28 touchdowns in his career. He was the only quarterback in Division II history to ever achieve that feat. After finishing the season with 2,398 yards passing and 1,010 yards rushing, Chapman became the second quarterback in NCAA history (the only Division-II player) to achieve that honor. Chapman was named MIAA offensive MVP, and along with eight other Lions, named to the all-conference team. The other Lions include junior safety Ryan Burpo to the second-team defense; senior running back Donald Glover, junior tight end Brandon Hill, freshman offensive line Jason Stumbo, and sophomore wide receiver Craig Winfrey received honorable mention offense, and sophomore safety T.J. Onstott and junior defensive tackle Arley Smith received honorable mention defense. There s a lot of great players in this league, Chapman said. It was an overall team award. He was named MIAA MVP as well as MIAA player of the week. Chapman ends his career at Southern with his name on 26 records in Southern s book. With his college career over, Chapman is now looking forward to his possible career in the NFL. Both the Houston Texans and the Cleveland Browns have visited Southern to test Chapman as a possible quarterback for their teams. I had a great five years at Southern and would like to wish my fellow teammates the best of luck, Chapman said. |
