Teacher award nominations underway

Teaching can be a thankless job, especially on the college level.

But now students have a chance to repay that instructor for accepting a paper two weeks after it was due.

We ve had the contest for quite a while,  said Julie Vestal, secretary to the vice president for academic affairs.  It started in roughly 1976.

The academic affairs office began taking nomination forms on Nov. 7 and will continue accepting forms through Dec. 13. It will also take applications again during the spring semester, with the two winners announced during the May 2003 commencement ceremonies.

Winners, however, are not selected as one might think.

There is a committee made up of past winners, and they go over all of the applications and review what has been written about each teacher, and make two selections from there,  Vestal said.

To be eligible for the award, instructors must be teaching full time, have at least six hours a semester, and been an employee at Southern for at least three years.

The two instructors who are selected as winners will receive an award of $1,000 from the Missouri Southern Foundation, who also covers the expenses needed to finance the program.

Entry forms may be obtained at almost all buildings, and need to be returned no later than Friday, Dec. 13 to Hearnes Hall, Room 200. The contest nominations are open to all faculty, alumni and students.
