Students pay price for budget cuts

Chart Opinion

Once again, Missouri Southern is experiencing uncertainty when it comes to the budget.

Before the fall semester began, students were faced with a substantial tuition increase due to withholdings from the state government. Missouri colleges could bear even more cuts before the spring semester.

According to College President Julio Le n, it could be December before state institutions know the future of their budgets. Luckily, that means it will be too late for Southern students to face another tuition increase or surcharge.

But that does not mean Southern will not suffer.

All department allocations have been cut in half, and they are operating with few resources. This is the price the College has had to pay to create a cushion in case of more withholdings.

We have said it before, and we will say it again - in order to maintain high-quality education at Southern, all members of the institution, especially students, must stay informed about the state budget.

Missouri colleges and universities have endured the worst of the cuts. As students, that s our money. We have the right to know what is being taken from us and why.

Unfortunately, no candidates in the recent elections placed higher education on their platforms. So if students want something done about this educational crisis, they must stay in contact with their legislators.

Students paid the price for these cuts in the past. Now the College is putting up with the pain. As students, it is our duty to protect Southern s future.
