Mock Interviews at MSSU

Do you have an important interview coming up? Practice, Practice, Practice! For help on this, set up a mock interview with Career Services. Even if you don't have an interview coming up, it's never too early to start practicing your interviewing skills.

If you have just learned you have an interview coming up within the next two days, call us at (417) 625-9343 and we will check our calendar to see if we can fit you in. For non-emergencies, you should submit a Mock Interview Request Form with your resume to Career Services (2nd Floor of Spiva Library, Room 207). Please plan ahead to assure we have an available appointment time for you. Mock Interview Day

Mock Interview Day for this year will be announced as it is scheduled - check Career Services Events Calendar for up-to-date information!

What is Mock Interview Day?
Employers from various industries are invited to spend a day at Missouri Southern State University conducting practice interviews with students. Every attempt is made to match you with an employer representing an industry or major that you are interested in.

What is a Mock Interview?
A mock interview is a 30-minute individual session with an employer to help you prepare and strategize for future interviews. Traditional and behavioral interviewing questions will be presented and you will be asked to respond, as in a real interview. After the interview, you will be given constructive feedback regarding your interviewing style and your response to the questions.

What are the procedures for a Mock Interview?
  1. Go to the Career Services Events Calendar and complete the Mock Interview Day Registration Form which will be available online once the event is scheduled.
  2. If you have questions or topics that you would like to practice, please note them on the form.
  3. Come "dressed to impress" in business casual, no jeans or t-shirts.
  4. Bring a copy of your resume, cover letter, portfolio or whatever you feel is necessary for the interview.

How can I prepare for a Mock Interview?
  1. You should have a good idea of what your interests, values, skills, and competencies are. Not only does this help you feel more self-confident, but it gives you valuable information that you can use when trying to convince potential employers why they should hire you. To learn more about this, go to Career & Personality Assessments page.
  2. Check out websites or review a book on interviewing techniques prior to your mock interview.
  3. Practice answering Interview Questions. Have a friend or family member read them to you, record yourself responding to the questions to hear how you sound, or practice answering in front of a mirror. While doing this, listen for fluctuations in your voice to be sure you don't sound flat and boring, and practice using subtle hand gestures and smiling as you respond.
