Join us as we watch film clips and discuss Freedom Riders

Freedom Riders: The Freedom Rides of 1961 were a pivotal moment in the long Civil Rights struggle that redefined America. Based on Raymond Arsenault's recent book, this documentary film offers an inside look at the brave band of activists who challenged segregation in the Deep South.

Scholar: Dr. Steven Wagner is professor of history at Missouri Southern State University where he has been a member of the faculty since 2000.  He teaches a variety of courses in 20th century United States history, including The Civil Rights Era. He received his PhD from Purdue University in 1999, and is the author of Eisenhower Republicanism: Pursuing the Middle Way, published in 2006.

The Created Equal films and public programs have been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
