Department of Finance and Economics

Welcome to the Department of Finance and Economics at Missouri Southern State University. The fields of finance and economics offer many exciting opportunities, and our goal is to provide students with the real-world knowledge and fundamental skills necessary to excel in their chosen career field. The major areas in the Department have been divided into five concentrations to allow students to focus on their career interests and prepare them to take professional certification exams. Students can choose a concentration in Economics, Certified Financial Management, the Charted Financial Analyst Designation, Personal Financial Planning, or Banking. These concentrations prepare students for rewarding careers in such areas as corporate finance, portfolio management, investment advising, financial planning, economic advising and banking.

The Department currently has five full-time professors with terminal degrees who are dedicated to assisting students in acquiring the problem-solving and communication skills that are vital to begin their careers. The faculty also engages in scholarly research, professional development, and community service. The department advises the Investments Club, a student organization that is open to all Business students. The Investments Club hosts area professionals to discuss careers in finance, manages an investment portfolio, attends professional conventions, and provides other networking opportunities with area business leaders.

The Department of Finance and Economics also provides real world security analysis, financial trading, and portfolio management to our students in the Edwards Jones Investment Center, a state-of-the-art learning laboratory that includes two LCD monitors, 20 computers workstations, a Bloomberg terminal, and financial software such as Morningstar, Standard and Poor's Research Insight, and Ibbotson Encorr. The Missouri Southern Foundation has also entrusted the Department to manage a portion of it funds through the Youngman Portfolio class, in which students do security analysis, make investment decisions, and manage the portfolio under the guidance of a faculty advisor.

Courses offered by the Department of Finance and Economics provide students with real-world skills and opportunities to excel.
