Lipsey adds to record book with top mark in pole vault at PSU

Pittsburg, Kan.
-- Already holding the school record for the indoor pole vault, Ciara Lipsey added the outdoor record and the track record, as well at the Pittsburg State Gorillas Classic today in Pittsburg.

Lipsey took the title with a provisional height of 12 feet, five and a half inches. The mark is an inch higher than the previous mark set by Erica Culver last year at the ESU Last Chance. Kara Eckard and Caritta Riutta raced to a first place finish in their respective races as Eckard won the 3k and Riutta the 800m. Kari Fritchie was second in the 3k, while Shannan Borgard was fourth in the 800m.

Nicole Green finished second in the shot put, but was the top collegian finishing behind only former Lion Jessica Tallman. Green threw a distance of 42 feet, nine and a quarter inches. Emilie Mieseler was second in the hammer, trailing just Tallman with a distance of 162 feet, 11 inches. Cortney Vie was third in the event. Jill Weeks won the second straight javelin in a row posting a distance of 130 feet 11 inches. Vie was third in the discus, followed by Erin Steffens. Steffens also placed fourth in the shot.

Channell Lloyd had a provisional time of 14.56 in the 110m hurdles, while placing fifth in the long jump. Lisa Vengels was third in the high jump, while Courtney Waltbillig placed fourth in the 1500m. The Lions' 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams each finished third. Danielle Oliver placed sixth in the 100m with a time of 12.53.

In men's action, Josh Mathis took home the 3k steeplechase with a provisional time of 9:17.70. Philip Horn was second in the 110m hurdles, while John Lowe placed third in the 400m hurdles. Seth Hackney and Kyle Hancock placed third and sixth in the shot put, while Chris Brown placed fourth in the high jump.

Corey Shumate and Horn placed fifth and sixth in the pole vault, while Horn and Taylor McClelland were 7th and 9th in the long jump. McClelland was fifth in the triple jump. 

Both teams will be back in action next weekend as the Lions will send a contingent of athletes to both the KU Relays in Lawrence, Kan., as well as the John McDonnell Invitational at the University of Arkansas.
