Women finish second, men fifth at 2009 MIAA Indoor Championships

Mo. -- The Missouri Southern women finished second and the men fifth at the 2009 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships held this weekend at the University of Central Missouri.

The Southern women led going into the last event, but a first-place finish in the mile relay from Nebraska-Omaha lifted the Mavericks over Southern for a 1.5 point victory in the school's first year in the conference.

The Missouri Southern track teams had 22 All-MIAA performers including two multiple performers in Kara Eckard and Courtney Waltbillig. Eckard finished second in the 3,000 meters and third in the mile, while anchoring the women's 2nd place DMR team. Waltbillig was second in the 5,000 meters and third in the 3k.

Ciara Lipsey took home the title in the pole vault and set a new school record vaulting to a height of 12 feet, four and three quarter inches. She broke the previous record (12-04.50) set by Erica Culver at the 2007 MIAA Championships.

Emilie Mieseler improved her provisional and bested her previous personal best by eight and a half inches, taking the title in the weight throw with a distance of 56 feet, 10 and three quarter inches. Cortney Vie picked up All-MIAA honors placing third in the weight throw, while Nicole Green was third in the shot put. Other All-MIAA performers on the women's side include Channell Lloyd (3rd in triple jump) and Carita Riutta (2nd in 600 yard). The women's distance medley team of Silvia Pineda, Riutta, Kaitlin Wilkinson and Eckard finished second to earn All-MIAA status.

Seager Wilson and Corey Shumate were All-MIAA finishing second and third in the pole vault, while Chris Brown placed third in the high jump to earn Al-Conference honors. Phillip Horn finished second in the 60 meter hurdles to be named All-MIAA. The men's DMR team of Aki Numella, Derek Wright, Kevin Wright and Jarkko Jarvenpaa finished third to earn All-MIAA honors.

Both teams will now wait to see which athletes qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships in Houston March 13-14. Kimi Shank has automatically qualified in the 5,000 meters and four other Lions are in the top ten nationally in their events, with several others ranking in the top 15.
