Lions compete at PSU and Husker Invitationals

-- The Missouri Southern men's and women's track and field teams competed this weekend at both the Pittsburg State and University of Nebraska Husker Invitationals.

At PSU, the Lions sent a small squad of mainly sprinters and throwers. Channell Lloyd won her heat in the 55m hurdles and finished second in the finals with a time of 8.72. Kayla Piley finished fourth with a time of 9.34. Lloyd and Piley were 2nd (17-1.50) and ninth in the long jump, while Jestine Hayes was fifth (34-9-00) in the triple jump.

Erin Steffens (40-11.00) and Emilie Miesler (40-10.5) were third and fourth in the shot put, while Miesler won the weight throw with a distance of 52-00.5. Amanda Littlefield finished sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 44-2.00. Adam Sims was seventh in the shot put 45-2.5.

At the Husker Invitational, Jessica Selby-Tallman again showed her All-American form with another automatic qualifying distance in the shot put. Selby-Tallman finished fifth with a distance of 50-3.25 (15.32m). The distance is second in Division II this year only to her 15.75m mark last weekend. Jessica Self and Courtney Vie finished 16th and 17th in the shot.

Selby-Tallman was seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 56 feet even (17.07m), while Self and Vie were 10th and 11th, respectively. Erica Culver finished 11th in the pole vault with a height of 11-3.75 (3.45m), while Alison Walker finished fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:17.15.

Kimi Shank was second in the 3k at 10:08.72, while teammate Victoria Kline finished 8th at 10:36.70. The women's distance medley relay team of Courtney Waltbillig, Carita Riutta, Alison Walker and Kara Eckard finished fourth with a time of 12:24.12.

In men's action, Phillip Horn finished seventh in the heptathlon with 4,796 points. Jacob Williams tied his coach Kyle Rutledge in the pole vault with a provisional height of 16 feet, four and three quarter inches (5.05m), finishing 8th. Russell Ellis was 11th with a height of 15-11.00 (4.85m).

Ryan Arthur was sixth in the 5k with a time of 15:15.78, while Brennan Benkert, Dustin Miller and Andrew Reed were 9th, 10th, and 13th, respectively. Corey Reynolds finished fifth in the high jump with a height of six foot, eight and a quarter inches (2.04m). Derek Wright finished 13th in the 800m (1:57.77), while Jarrko Jarvenpaa was 10th in the 3k at 9:19.83. Aki Nummela was sixth in the mile at 4:18.43.

The Lions will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Warrensburg to compete in the Central Missouri Mule Relays.
