Another Automatic Qualification For NCAA's Joplin, Mo. -- Already qualified for the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National meet in the shot put, Missouri Southern senior thrower Jessica Selby-Tallman qualified again tonight in the weight throw at day one of the MSSU Fazolis/Baymont Inn Invitational. Kimi Shank, competing at the University of Arkansas Invite in the 5k, set a new school record and finished second in the event. Selby-Tallman launched a throw of 59 feet, four and a quarter inches (18.09m) in her first throw of finals to automatically qualify for this year's indoor meet. Her previous best in the indoor weight throw was 54 feet, four inches which she threw two weeks ago at Arkansas. Senior Jessica Self and sophomore Courtney Vie both increased their personal best marks by more than two feet as Self finished second with a distance of 55 feet one inch (16.79m) and Vie threw 53 feet nine inches (16.38m). Emilie Miesler finished fourth with a distance of 50 feet, nine and a quarter inches, while Amanda Littlefield was sixth with a distance of 46 feet, two and three quarter inches (14.09m). Shank was the top collegiate performer and defeated her nearest competition by 32 seconds. The time is also an NCAA provisional and breaks the MSSU record, previously held by Sonia Eudy (17:40.08) by 14 seconds. The women took home six of the top seven spots in the 3k, including first through third. Victoria Kline finished first with a time of 10:47, while Krista Merrill and Taylor Whitacre were second and third with times of 10:52.80 and 11:04.21, respectively. Kate Brittan, Chandra Cole and Lori Fork finished fifth, sixth and seventh. Channell Lloyd took home the title in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, seven and three quarter inches (5.08m). Kayla Piley and Jestine Hayes were fifth and seventh, respectively. Danielle Oliver was second in the 200m with a time of 27.43, just narrowly missing out on the title as Southwestern College's Nique Wallace edged Oliver with a time of 27.42. Stacy Borgard finished fourth with a time of 28.16. The distance medley relay team of Courtney Waltbillig, Carita Riuatta, Allison Walker and Kara Eckard took home the title in convincing fashion defeating second place Southwestern by 16 seconds with a time of 12:37.16. Junior college transfer Phillip Horn showed up in big fashion in his first home meet as a Lion, taking home the title in the long jump with a distance of 22 feet, three and three quarter inches (6.80m). Andrew Wright and Jordan Patton finished first and second in the 200m, as Wright (23.18) edged Patton (23.31) for the title by just .13 seconds. Jeremiah Jones finished eighth with a time of 23.93. The distance medley team of Kyle Davis, Kevin Wright, Derek Wright and Aki Nummela finished second, just a little over a second behind Oklahoma Christian with a time of 10:17.77. Ryan Arthur and Brennan Benkert were second and third in the 3k with times of 8:45.07 and 8:50.04, while Dustin Miller was fifth with a time of 9:02.13. John Isenman finished fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 48 feet even (14.63m). Both teams will conclude the meet tomorrow morning at 10:30 am with the men's shot put, women's triple jump and women's pole vault kicking off the day-long competition. |
