Southern men capture MIAA Title and 24 athletes named All-MIAA

-- The Missouri Southern men captured the 2007 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships today at Central Missouri. This is the first title since the 2004 season when both the men and women won at home.

The Southern women placed fourth behind MIAA Champ Central Missouri, Pittsburg State and Truman State. The men topped second place Pittsburg State by just four points, while Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri were third and fourth.

Highlighting the men's win was the pole vaulters. Southern took first through third in the event, as well as sixth. Seager Wilson claimed his first MIAA Title with a vault of 16 feet, one and three quarters of an inch. Jacob Williams and Russell Ellis finished second and third, while Corey Shumate placed sixth.

Jeremy McCadney was an All-MIAA selection in the long jump, finishing sixth, while Brennan Benkert and Dustin Miller both earned All-MIAA status in the 5000 meter. Dustin Dixon was All-MIAA in the 3000 meter and mile run, while Marcus Walton was second in the 800 meter. Tyler Chiartano was second in the 600 yard, and Ryan McPeak was All-MIAA in both the 400 and 200 meter dashes. McPeak set a new school record in the 400 with a time of 49.14. The Southern distance medley relay placed second, while the 4x400 relay was also second.

Jessica Selby won her third consecutive MIAA shot put title with a distance of 49 feet, two and a quarter inches. Ashley Birch set the school record in the 60 meter semis last night with a time of 7.72. She placed second in the finals, just one, one hundredth of a second off the first place time, and set another school record, this time with a mark of 7.67.

Jessica Self earned All-MIAA status in the weight throw, while Courtney Vie picked up All-MIAA honors in both the weight and shot put. Emily Mieseler was All-MIAA in the shot put, while Erica Culver and Ciara Lipsey both earned All-MIAA honors in the pole vault. Kimi Shank was All-MIAA in the 5000 meter, while Allison Walker finished fourth in the 800. Sarah Wallace was third in the 600 yard, while Kara Eckard earned All-MIAA status in the mile run.

In all, Southern had 24 athletes and two relay teams earn All-MIAA status this year.
