FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Caffey, Jones named Athletes of the Week
Lions sweep women’s track & field
honors
Missouri Southern State University seniors Ashley Caffey
(Lebanon, Mo.) and Danee Jones (Clayton, Mo.) were named Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics Association Athletes of the Week on
Tuesday (May 3) in the sport of women’s track &
field.
Caffey, a 5-foot-7 senior, broke the
four-week old school record in the 3000-meter run, charting a
first-place time of 9 minutes, 57.42 seconds at the MSSU Bill
Williams/Bob Laptad Invitational on Saturday (April 30).
Caffey became the first MSSU female to
eclipse the 10-minute barrier outdoors in the event. She
knocked 4.41 seconds from her previous season best and NCAA
provisional qualifying mark. Caffey, second four weeks ago when
teammate Erin Click broke the record then held by Margaret
Miklovic, beat Click’s time by 4.1 seconds.
Jones established an NCAA provisional
qualfying mark in a third event, winning the shot put with a
team-season best throw of 45 feet, 6.5 inches at the MSSU Bill
Williams/Bob Laptad Invitational.
Jones also improved her provisional mark in
the hammer throw, with a second-place mark of 176-10. She also
has provisional in the discus.
Jones’ throw in the shot was 4.25
inches from tying Stephanie Wainscott’s school record.
Jones already owns MSSU outdoor standards in the hammer and
discus.
It marked Jones’ third MIAA Athlete
of the Week award this spring, and her sixth in both indoor and
outdoor track & field this year.
Caffey and Jones will lead the Lion women
into battle this weekend at the MIAA Outdoor Championships in
Pittsburg, Kan. Southern, which tied for third in the MIAA
indoor race in February, will be looking to improve on a
fourth-place finish from last year’s outdoor
championships.
