Caffey named MIAA Athlete of the Week

Missouri Southern State University track & field athlete Ashley Caffey (Lebanon, Mo.) was named Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Feb. 8).
Caffey, a 5-foot-7 junior, earned provisional qualification in the 5000 meters during the MSSU Baymont Inn/Fazoli's Open last weekend (Feb. 4-5).
She placed second behind Helen Singoei of Harding (Ark.) with a time of 17 minutes, 47.92 seconds -- eight seconds shy of Sonia Eudy’s 1998 school record and second-best indoor 5K in Southern history.
Caffey also ran the 1200-meter leg of the Lions’ distance medley relay team, which improved its provisional qualifying time by 3.65 seconds with a third-place clocking of 12:11.68.
Caffey is a graduate of Lebanon High School.
Caffey joins MSSU senior Danee Jones (Clayton, Mo.) as the Lions’ winners this season of the women’s award. Jones had won the field award each of the previous three weeks.
Missouri Southern’s track & field teams continue their indoor seasons on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 11-12) at the University of Arkansas Tyson Invitational.
