FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jones wins third straight MIAA weekly honor
Senior thrower named MIAA Athlete of the
Week
Missouri Southern State University
women’s track & field senior Danee Jones (Clayton,
Mo.) today was named Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics
Association Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week
for the third consecutive week.
On Friday (Jan. 28), the 5-foot-9 senior
continued her assault on the Missouri Southern records,
improving her school standard in the weight throw for the third
consecutive week. She threw the weight 61 feet, 9.75 inches and
placed second at Friday’s KU Relays. The throw secured
Jones’ a spot at next month’s NCAA Division II
Indoor Championships in Boston, Mass. and was an improvement by
more than two feet on her previous school record.
Jones’ throw at KU would’ve
been an NCAA Division I provisional. She finished second only
to Oklahoma State’s Delisa McClain and currently leads
NCAA-II by 18.5 inches.
Jones also finished fifth in the shot put
with a toss of 43’-9”.
Jones, the two-time MIAA defending champion
in the weight throw, is a two-time All-America with the MSSU
women’s track & field team. She earned her only
indoor All-America honor with a third-place national finish in
2003.
The Missouri Southern track & field
teams continue their indoor schedules this weekend when they
host the Baymont Inn/Fazoli’s Open at the Leggett &
Platt Athletic Center. Action begins on Friday (Feb. 4) at 5
p.m. with the last Friday event scheduled for 8:15 p.m. The
meet resumes on Saturday (Feb. 5) with field events beginning
at 11 a.m. The last event, the mile relay, is scheduled to
begin at 6:45 p.m. Saturday.
