FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Two from MSSU track & field teams earn
league athlete of the week honor
Missouri Southern State University had two
track & field student-athletes pick up Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics Association Athlete of the Week
honors on Tuesday (Jan. 18).
Danee Jones
(Clayton, Mo.) and Matt Campbell (Worthington, Ind.) earned the awards after
their performances over the weekend at the MSSU/Radio Shack
Open.
Jones, a 5-foot-9 senior, won the
women’s weight throw and shot put in the season opening
meet at Missouri Southern’s Leggett & Platt Athletic
Center. Her throw in the weight throw (58 feet, 11.25 inches)
tied the school record she set in 2003 and gave her an NCAA
Division II provisional qualifying mark. The throw is also the
top mark currently in NCAA-II.
Jones (first name pronounced da-NAY), a
two-time All-America at MSSU, also won the shot put with a
throw of 41’-7.75”.
Campbell, a 5-8 junior, captured first
place in the men’s pole vault during Friday’s
action at the MSSU meet. Campbell cleared 16’-8.75”
to win the event and tied Mike Westlund’s facility
record. The mark, an NCAA-II automatic qualifying vault and the
current top distance in Division II, also guaranteed Campbell a
spot at the Division II National Championships to be held in
March in Boston, Mass.
Missouri Southern’s track & field
teams continue action on Friday and Saturday at the University
of Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville.
